Evan Lawrence: coming from a country full of superstitions

It's impressive how a single story can inspire such diversity through different mediums! Visual artists from around the world are taking part in WHISTLE project, in an attempt to present a multi-sensory experience never attempted before in the Greek visual art scene. And that's because we do not think of visual art as an experience that when viewed fades away, but as an excuse, a triggering event, a reason to produce an artistic conversation and a literal dialogue with everyone interested. This is the way we feel visual art should work.

In this short interview we meet visual artist, Evan Lawrence, from Indonesia.

How did you hear about it?
Just accidentally found the call on a blog.

What intrigued you?
The story and the atmosphere are the elements that really intrigued me.

What was your workflow?
I usually draw a rough sketch first. Then, I convert it into digital. This process, really helps me to get all of my ideas just flow out of my head, before the finished work.

What was your artistic style, any influences?
I would say, surreal is the primary theme across most of my work. I got a huge influence by Salvador Dali’s paintings.

What inspires you as an artist?
It may sound cliché, but I get inspiration from everything. Ordinary things around me. Every moment, every experience, has the potential, once analyzed, to become the base for my next project.

Do you believe in superstitions?
Sometimes, I do. After all, I live in a country full of superstitions!

What do you want people to see in your work?
I hope that my work gives people the chance to experience, feel a different kind of atmosphere.

What about the idea of collective storytelling?
To be able to work on a collaborative project with talented artists from around the world, is totally amazing! A visual art project that gives an amazing opportunity to blend different backgrounds, cultures, and ideas into a single narrative.

Why should people support this project?
Simply because WHISTLE is an amazing project. Also, because it will bring people/viewers/audiences closer to visual art.

All the works created for WHISTLE project by Ewan, will be available to the public during the transmedia exhibition.
