Jennifer Wester: we are better together

It's impressive how a single story can inspire such diversity through different mediums! Visual artists from around the world are taking part in WHISTLE project, in an attempt to present a multi-sensory experience never attempted before in the Greek visual art scene. And that's because we do not think of visual art as an experience that when viewed fades away, but as an excuse, a triggering event, a reason to produce an artistic conversation and a literal dialogue with everyone interested. This is the way we feel visual art should work.

In this article a multi-dimensional personality. Painter, sculptor , graphic designer, performer! This is Jennifer Wester from Texas, USA.

Why did you decide to participate in Whistle Project?
I was excited to answer the Artist call to the Whistle Project because I appreciate this unique and inclusive approach to expanding the artistic impact and anticipation of a visual project.

What intrigued you?
I generally do three dimensional work so I was excited to work on a 2D piece that could allow me to digitally participate in a show half way around the world.

What was your workflow?
After reviewing the materials shared by WHISTLE, I let my mind ruminate on the direction in which I wanted to go. I ended up taking up a very regular drawing practice every day for months in order to orient myself to what kind of character I would expand upon in my own body of work in future drawing exercises. The result of which is the character depicted which I have named one of my padlock people. The heart is chained to the head that is inescapably fighting for control. In the specific work I submitted, the dark is consuming the body and mind while the heart runs but is chained to the madness inescapably.

What was your artistic style, any influences?
I work closely with another artist that does a great deal of animation and graphic art. He and I exchanged daily sketches to keep the exercise up and slowly this allowed me to develop my own character style.

Do you believe in superstitions?
I am not yet convinced as to whether I believe in superstitions. I do believe that what you tell your mind will become true for you.

What do you want people to see in your works?
I want people to read the work as it comes to them and feel their own interpretations of the actions present.

Can you make a comment on the idea of collective storytelling?
The concept of storytelling and folklore is in itself a collective process, either in the sharing or in the passing forward of any story. This explicit acknowledgement and further action to increase the intensity of this communal nature of storytelling is a wonderful message to the every more isolated and independent world mindset that we are better together.

Why should people support this project
I believe that cultural and artistic endeavors are always important to support in a community as they bond, blend, and grow the connections between otherwise individual human beings, shaping the fabric of civilization.

Why go to the exhibition?
People should go to the exhibition to explore and engage with work and art from around the world.

Tell us a few words about the work you submitted to Whistle. How it is related to the story?
The concept of thrill, fright, mind contortion, and dark effects meet the emotion and chained heart in this work. The heart is chained to the head of this padlock person that is inescapably fighting for control but loosing to the dark that is consuming the body and mind while the heart pulls to save itself and the figure but is chained to the madness inescapably.

All the works created for WHISTLE project by Jennifer, will be available to the public during the transmedia exhibition.
